Last week, I had written a post about “5 Gmail feature that will spice up your inbox“, which thanks to you people was very well received. I started using Gmail for all my unofficial communication more than 2 years back and what I love about it its the small things. This particular feature is my favorite.
Let me try to explain this with an example, let’s consider a fictitious email address like greatgmail@gmail.com (Sorry if this id does exist). Do you know that all these combinations are all the same email id, great.gmail@gmail.com, gr.eatgmail.@gmail.com. Go ahead try it with your gmail id, if you already have a “.“, then move it from the current location to anywhere in the id before “@”, if you don’t have “.”, then add it anywhere in the email id and send a mail . You will receive the email.
Basically, no matter if you add a “.” or move the “.” before the “@” in your Gmail id, Gmail still treats it the same. They all belong to you. You may ask whats great about it, I put it to a lot of use, you can use your imagination. Two places where I find it handy,
1) Catch Spamming Website : A lot of websites ask you for your email address, promising you that they won’t spam you. But, you inbox ends up full of them. I use this feature of Gmail to submit different combination of my id to different sites, then I know exactly which ones are the spamming ones.
2) Register at the same site with the same ID: Many sites like Twitter, don’t allow you to create different user with the same email id. This feature will let you create as many as you want. Because each combination of your email would be treated as a separate email ID.
Hope you find this information useful, please don’t use this feature for troubling anyone or any website. Use wisely

Nice one.
By the by there is another way to gain even more email addresses with gmail (and more insight in who sells your email address):
Say your email is username@gmail.com and you want a custom address for a spammy site, you can use:
username+nameofspammysite@gmail.com
Basically if you add a ‘+’ after your username, you can put anything behind the plus and gmail will still deliver the mail to you.
Only down side to this is that most web developers get email validation wrong and will (unjustly) not allow a ‘+’ in the email address field.
Are you a professional journalist? You write very well.
Thank you! You often write very interesting articles. You improved my mood.
Thanks Jrf,
You are right by saying that most email validation wouldn’t let a “+” sign pass. Next time I am doing such a coding, I would let gmail
pass.

Rohit
