Brian Croll, vice president of Apple’s Mac OS X worldwide product marketing, has criticized Microsoft calling it an “Antiquated Technology”. The remarks comes at the same time as the release of  Windows 7, according to Brian Croll Microsoft users were tired of the “headaches” caused by the Windows operating system, and he expects some disillusioned Windows users to switch to Apple’s Mac platform.

We think this is an opportune time for people to take a look at a Mac. We believe we can get even more people moving over.

Windows 7 is still just Windows. It doesn’t change a lot. It’s still complex, it’s still really expensive when you look at the cost of the upgrade, and there’s still security concerns

It also still requires a lot of assembly. It turns out when you get Windows 7 it doesn’t even have some of the basic applications

Windows 7

Windows 7

like mail or chat, or programs to manage your photos. You actually have to go and find them and download them.

Apple has just shown a remarkable growth in its previous quarters revenues, which indirectly can be attributed to the rise of Mac users. Microsoft is pinning a lot of hope on this new operating system, after the highly criticized Windows Vista.  Windows 7 has been appreciated by a lot of reviewers but its still is a Windows system. For people who have used for Windows and Mac the difference is evident, Microsoft has always been subject to criticism, but still it finds its way into billions of computers world wide. For me Apple will have to do more than this to find its way to replace Windows.

Apple need not do a thing. Microsoft has been doing it all on its own. I switched to the Mac platform about a year ago and I’ve never been happier. It took me about 3 months to get used to the Mac. It used to frustrate me at first, until I realized that all I had to do was shed the bad habits that were forced upon me by Windows and to think more intuitively. Even MS Office on the Mac is far superior to MS Office on Windows. Go figure!

Microsoft, please continue to do what you’re doing – putting out really crappy software and horrendous interfaces, among a host of other crap that I had been putting up with, and Apple will get many more converts without dong anything.

Yea Windows is incredibly hard to use, this means that the Windows users are very intelligent or that Mac users are not very “smart”

My clean install of tiger 10.4 removed iphoto and imovie, these programs were untouched when just upgrading to os 10.4 from the previous mac os

macs are becoming more windows like….

Apple needs to learn to not be cocky, ‘know-it-all’ and ‘holier-than-thou’ all combined. The fact that I can’t use the Apple technology, however technolgically ‘advanced’ and supernal it may be, is that it’s just too expensive. Period. Can’t they make software more accessible, instead of pontifying from their lofty pulpits?
They should learn to appreciate and not be so disparaging about others, even if it be their bitterest competitor. You see this kind of behaviour in unbendable organised religions, something not quite expected to be seen in Technology.
Just be benevolent (or just plain quiet) sometimes; it will not hurt.

I do believe what this guy is saying. The only problem is, the worlds economy is starting to dwindle. As far as I can tell, the reason why so many pc’s with Windows are found in millions of homes is because of the cost vs a Mac. Sure, Mac is more productive and provides the better usage of the resources it has but until it can come down in price, it’s just not worth it. I can buy 3-4 pc’s to the cost of some Mac’s out there.

Funny, just the last six months I’ve been thinking: – after 10 years of Microsoft, I think I’ve finally had enough, and I am going to get a Mac, even though my PC doesn’t need to be replaced yet. What really woke me up, was when I went from an 8 year-old WIN98 500Mhz ‘puter to my current Vista 3Ghz ‘puter, and hardly noticed any improvement! Windows is ridiculous- no matter how clean you keep your system, there’s always work to do and performance always degrades. Seems to me that 90% of Windows users are unhappy. Don’t think I’ve ever encountered a Mac user who was unhappy with their machine- plus the Macs don’t go obsolete as fast. Open your wallet, Jobsie boy, incoming!

10.23.09

Why do people buy Apple stuff? The PC is a machine and the Apple is an appliance, there’s something wrong with those that buy Apple, most of them are f***ing commie liberal dip sh*ts who wouldn’t know free thinking if it was rectally probing them with a bastard file.

I too switched over to Apple about a year ago. I can say that I have never ever had a more stable or enjoyable computer. And I have been a Windows System Administrator since about ten years. I admit that I am still running a virtual Windows XP machine on it as well, as some Windows software is only availbale on the Windows platform. But I don’t think I will ever buy a Windows machine again, or at least not for the foreseeable future. As a matter of fact I am thinking of replacing the pc that my girlfriend is using with a Mac. I would recommend everyone that has the money to do the same! It will make your life a lot easier, it save you a lot of time and to me that is worth a lot.

Your Comments, None, well? almost none. Linux for years now.

10.23.09

What an ass, you knows damned well they *can’t* include chat and other programs in the OS because of anti-trust laws. Why doesn’t Apple have to play by the same rules?

Windows 7 is the best OS ever made. Ever.

Macs are the fascists of the tech world. You see them shouting down everything and everyone that does not agree with them… Their propaganda, sorry commercials, are proof of such. Their hardware and software offers no choice you can only buy their brand.

I have no security, virus, or hardware problems with my PC.

I do not need to upgrade it all the time, nor do I have to do repairs to maintain it. Maybe you should set it up right the first time and not install BS apps that you think are cute which serve no purpose.

I get great performance from it. I may get a blue screen of death once a year if that much. And that is only because I overclock, tweak, and do other things you can not do with a mac.

I build my own because I know how too unlike mac users who are lucky to know how to turn on the power switch.

The fact that there are so many mac user support\problem shooting sites is proof that macs are not all they are cracked up to be other then over priced. You can buy all the software mac includes for much less then they charge you… Of course installation is a problem for mac users since its so hard… twits….

Anyone who does not see an difference between an 500mhz computer and a 3ghz is probably too dumb to use a computer. Or is being disingenuous at best.

Macs are overpriced and not everything the sheep make them out to be. I’ve used two and they suck. But PC users with half a brain know that which is why we do not need massive campaigning talking about how macs suck.

Wait until the mac market share becomes something worthwhile and you will see many more viruses. Right now the people who make viruses see macs as irrelevant not untouchable because macs are so great.

Macs go obsolete as fast as every other machine its called progress, moores law applies to every computer regardless of brand name you tools.

I’ll put an i7 pc up against any crapintosh any day of the week.

Hell, I’ll put my 2 year old core 2 duo up against any mac any day of the week.

Macs are not more productive and do not use resources better that is an opinion not a fact.

How are they more productive? Anything that can be done on a mac can be done on a pc at less then half the cost.

But America is full of tools who believe hype rather then substance.

Mac users just want to feel like they are part of the “in crowd” like they are hip and in the know. Kind of like people who voted for obama. All style no substance.

As for style here you go..

PC users are individuals with individual needs which is why our machines customizable and unique… Mac users are sheep which is why their machines are all the same hardware and software wise except for the exterior color of their machines which is so important when considering technology…. Stickers are not hardware upgrades, sorry grandma.

10.23.09

Go search “mac support sites”…

There are lots of them.

Which is surprising since macs and their users are infallible.

10.23.09

If Apple was really better they would offer the os as a choice for all hardware systems. I can build my PC for cheaper and put only the components I choose with windows. truth is… Windows gets more done for less.

10.23.09

Welcome to the world of “Illusion”, where you have the “Illusion” of choice in almost everything, but truly have it in NOTHING without ignoring what is controlled/propagandized. Ask the RIGHT question(s) and don’t let the masses/masters phrase it for you. Forget “A vs. B” – search for “C”. IF “C” is better, forget both “A” and “B”.

Democrat or Republican? NEITHER – INDEPENDENT

Coke or Pepsi/Miller or Bud? NEITHER – Local Brews all around

McDonalds or Burger King? NEITHER – Cook at Home

Mac or Windows – NEITHER – LINUX

10.23.09

Sure it’ll take more than this to get all the sheep to change, and people just keep buying windows. And the majority of people keep buying crappy, cheap cars too, but that doesn’t mean those crappy, cheap cars are any good.

Well Said David, Waiting till after the first of the year to get my new Toshiba X500 i7 Windows 7. Fully Loaded with my pic of Software and Hardware.
Apple should have changed there name to Vegtable for all the Veg heads out there buying MAC’s. Do Mac users buy into global warming too??? I bet they do!!!

10.23.09

So……Windows 7 is all the rage now? My…funny how Vista only lived for 2 years! Typical of Microsoft, and why I’ll be trying Apple. (Although I am a little leary, as I wouldn’t have an iPod- my Sansa Clip can blow the iPod away for a fraction of it’s cost). It’s not that I’m an Apple fan…far from it, it’s just that I seek an alternative to the bloated, quirky Windows, and am not motivated enough to do all the tinkering required for Linux (Though I may experiment with it)

“Name one thing your PC can do that my Mac can’t!”

“…right click.”

“You’re a jerk.”

10.23.09

My comment may be a bit late, but here goes anyway.

@Manntis – Mac’s can right click.

It’s interesting to note the comments, they are all either totally for Mac or totally against it. I note most of the totally against comments are actually incorrect – though they may have been correct 5 or more years ago, so I assume the comments come from users that haven’t tried a Mac in a while, I’m not going to bother going through them all, it’s pointless, despite their claim that Mac users are high in the sky, Windows users can be and often are just as bad, so there is little point arguing with either of them. That said, the only valid comment against Mac’s here has been the cost.

Mac’s are more expensive, in general, however, the do retain their value for longer, for most users they are more user friendly, the OS is quicker, for most purposes, and you can do almost anything on a Mac that you can on Windows, almost.

I use a Macbook Pro laptop simply because it is the most user friendly laptop I have ever tried, as well as running much quicker than an equivelant Windows machine. In saying that, I use a Windows workstation which I have just recently upgraded to Windows 7.

The reason for this is simple, you do not get the same usability features in a Mac desktop, be it an iMac, Mac Mini or Mac Pro that you get on a Macbook. Without those usability features it makes little to no difference to me which operating system I use, they are equally productive, especially now that I am running Windows 7 as it is notably faster than Vista.

Realistically, if a machine is productive, take advantage of it. If not, find one that is. That is all it really comes down to. You can have your personal taste or preference, but in the end unless you don’t actually do anything on your computer, productivity is the key.

Macbook’s let me do more easier than Windows laptops, so I use one. Windows 7 workstations let me do just as much as a Mac workstation but marginally cheaper, so I use one. Every piece of software I use is available on both Windows and Mac, both sync important data with each other. It’s a completely interoperable setup and it is the most productive way to work that I have found, so honestly, I may be a fan of Mac’s, but Microsoft does do things right too, and have been improving a great deal of late.

10.23.09

Just another note, @David – I use a Mac and am quite capable of putting together a Windows computer, I do it regularly and maintain a Windows based network entirely from the parts up, please do not generalise. Many of your points are valid but despite that, that doesn’t make them correct, I’ve had every one of my Mac computers, laptops and workstations apart and upgraded many of the components, just as I would with a Windows one, it really is an irrelevant point, there’s plenty of Windows users that can barely use the on/off switch as well.

Mac’s may go obsolete as fast, in theory, but in practice they don’t. One of my old Macbook Pro’s actually improved performance wise with each OS X upgrade released. The only Windows operating system that can claim that on old hardware is Windows 7, which is great, I’m glad to see Microsoft realising the importance of this.

As for installation, it’s pretty simple, put the file in the applications folder and you are done. The only reason thats complicated to people is because they expect it to behave like Windows.

As for productivity, as per my previous comment, I agree that workstations it makes no difference productivity wise, but hit a laptop and there are that many things you can do that speed up productivity just with the touch pad. Other things that are available on Mac workstations such as short cut keys for many of the Expose functions are better on the laptops as well simply because the keys are closer to where you are working and you can get them quicker.

Please don’t take this as a personal attack or anything mate, just you are getting worked up and generalising a lot and really cutting out a huge segment of both the Mac and Windows user bases in your assumptions.

First. Microsoft tried to “fix” things like applications using registry but they couldn’t do it without break existing programs. It’s “OK” for Apples to not run Windows programs but it’s not “OK” for Windows to run Windows programs.

Second. Windows gives more control which means the end user can break the system easier. People would complain if Windows was locked down to “protect” the computer from the end user, but no one seems to care that OS X does this.

Third. Apple sells hardware MS sells an OS. MS can’t include a ton of “extra” software since they sell an OS and that’s an anti-trust problem. Apple sell hardware, so including “extra” software with the included OS is not an anti-trust issue.

Apple doesn’t want to be where MS is right now. Apple makes a ton of $$ by charging a lot of their locked down hardware and people are willing to pay for it. Everyone and their mom makes 3rd party crapware for Windows but not for Apple. Windows clogs up fast with the average user just clicking “OK” on every install prompt. Apple would no longer be secure if it had the same market share as Microsoft. ALL Operating Systems have security issues that are being found. MS has had a bad track record, but is about on par now-a-days.

The main things OS X has going for it is that it’s dumbed down and works very well. Although the one problem of dumbing down OS X is it is hard to setup Enterprise network policies. Companies are going to use Microsoft on a large network where you need fine grained policies for different users/groups. As long as companies use Windows, the average person is going to be use to using Windows at home.

I can’t wait until Linux gets it’s window UIs refined to the point of OS X

I really have never given a damn about which “side” I was on – just wanted to run my small business, make a reasonable income, and enjoy my time away from work. I thoroughly learned XP, and built some nice machines to run my office. Ended up spending at least 5 -7 hours a month on maintenance, networking, virus eradication, fighting bit rot, etc. Very frustrating process, and ate into my income. Crashes, problems, etc. after 6 months of running. Decided to go with all Mac systems. Easy networking, no virus crap, and about 1 hour of maintenance over the last eight months. Not a single crash. Not even close – the Mac is far easier, more stable, and easy to use. There is NOTHING I cannot do on the Mac that I could do on XP. It simply makes me more money than XP. Not a fan boy, just an economically rational person who makes more money with a Mac office.

“I can buy 3-4 pc’s to the cost of some Mac’s out there.”
thing is after 18 months your 3 or 4 PC’s will be worth about the same as a second hand banana where as the iMac will still retain about 60% of its value on the second hand market, also if you have an upgrade to the OS The windows system will cost well in excess of £100 but snow leopard for example cost me £26 retail!
