Its a tough time to chose a career with economic turmoil around you. Not entirely due to this, many have walked on the path of entrepreneurship, which nonetheless is always being hyped by media. All the effort that media and society are making to encourage “Leadership and Entrepreneurship” has only made more to join B-Schools. Can’t say if the sole reason for promoting “Leadership” was to encourage confused student to enroll into newly opened B-Schools.
This overwhelming popularity of B-Schools has certainly given rise to many interesting discussion like, “Design Thinking in Business“. Following up the news, I landed upon a page which had list of 20 People who would change the business, interesting more than 90 percent of the people had a Masters degree either on Industrial Design or Design. Yes, they were formally a graduates of D-Schools, some also had MBA as a combo. This brought me to ask, ” Who are the business changers, the B-School Grads or D-School Grads. Though this is a very blunt question, after reviewing more article on the matter, I found both Schools were under a heavy criticism. More clearly, it was a fight between Right Brain and Left Brain thinkers.

So, what does a successful business has – Right or Left thinkers? Does good design encourage more sales or can good business plan encourage people to use bad designed products. I can only relate these problems to the most talked rivalry of Apple and Microsoft. One known to pray Design while other to business. But more you dwell upon it, you find that both have great designers and business thinkers behind. As a result, its obvious that the success is guaranteed by not following any of the rules but instead staying up in the competition and encouraging continuous innovation from both sides. We can see this from the recent uprising of Apple as a new market leader even in the times of economic disorder.
Apple’s iPhone as a design success and its collaboration with At&T as the successful business partnership proves the fact that both work hand in hand. So what is design and business? Many take design as a way of beautifying things and this is where they go wrong. Both business and design has one strongest intersection and it’s Decision Making. The fundamental is to understand the nature of the problem and to make correct decision on the business deals and product design. This requires understanding of topics beyond business and design like mathematics, social science, environment, technology and yes may be anthropology. So, the business success is more of the amalgamation of different fields coming together to solve one problem in the most efficient way, it should neither be just B or D. Its like the opposite pole of a magnet where both is the manifestation of same phenomenon with different purpose.
