The rise of spam mails and mail server attacks in the past few months have got everyone talking about internet security. Recently there has been attacks on major social networking sites and mail servers of popular email service providers. Apart from phishing messages and mails, in the last one month my email account has been used thrice to create secondary mail accounts with my name. Does that make me feel vulnerable, attacked, insecure? How about ‘all’.
The first time someone used my gmail account to create another account in gmail, the confirmation mail I received went unnoticed. The huge number of junk and unwanted mails arriving my mail box being the sole reason. While I was completely unaware of my new account, this imposter went on using my id. This was brought to my notice by a friend and on checking my new mail box I find my new account being used in various social networking sites for befriending guys.
There wasn’t much I could do except for changing my password since the account was already activated. I changed all my passwords and within a week, another verification mail lands in my inbox. This time the attempt was to make an id in Yahoo. I rejected the verification since there was absolutely nothing one could do to get more details. This wasn’t even a phishing mail, it just looked like someone trying to have some fun.
I am no celebrity not even a Twitter user with 10k followers. I just happen to be someone who is present in social media just like other millions. It’s not my bank account that was hacked, its my personal life thats being intruded. Is it technology thats driving us unsafe? The need for entertainment doesn’t end with Xbox and PlayStation, people need virtual lives to play with.
Is the only way to be safe is to sit with walls around?
