Microsoft had drawn a lot of attention lately and it was not just for Windows 7 but for the promotional strategies used for Windows 7. From Gifts on Twitter, Windows7 party to Family guy episode, Windows had everyone talking inspite of all the criticism it received. The Windows7 episode of Family Guy which was to be sponsored by Microsoft will not be aired as Microsoft thinks it does not go with the company’s brand image.
The deal was to mark the launch of Windows 7 and was signed only two weeks back.
“We initially chose to participate in the Seth and Alex variety show based on the audience composition and creative humour of Family Guy,” said Microsoft in a statement. “But after reviewing an early version of the variety show, it became clear that the content was not a fit with the Windows brand.”
Family Guy is known for its edgy humour which might be offensive to viewers. It was the previous episodes of the show featuring Mother Teresa being dumped outside a hospital after a drug overdose and jokes about abortion and paedophilia which got Microsoft change their decision.
While Microsoft has pulled the sponsorship for the episode, the other deals remain same. The ads would continue to run on Fox channel and Family Guy themed event featuring Windows7 for colleges and universities in US remain intact.
Lets have a look at one of the Family Guy ads featuring Windows7:
Makes me wonder, what was Microsoft thinking?

… in a way it is good to withdraw from such episodes in terms of brand integrity …
I agree. What I fail to understand is why did Microsoft agree to do this in the first place.
