Mobile Web Access in India for year 2009.

The Mobile Web refers to browser-based access to the Internet or web applications using a mobile device connected to a wireless network. For the first time since 2008, the total number of mobile web users grew past the total number of desktop computer based internet users  (source: International Telecommunications Union, Oct 2009).

The Norwegian Mobile Web browser gaint Opera released its monthly report where  the number of Opera Mini users more than doubled — from about 16.4 million in November 2008 to 41.7 million in November 2009. The company in this month’s report pointed a looking glass at the state of the mobile web in Africa, where Facebook has apparently taken a strong lead and ranks as the most popular site in six out of the top 10 countries.

The top 10 countries for Opera Mini usage (in order):

  1. Russia
  2. Indonesia
  3. India
  4. China
  5. Ukraine
  6. South Africa
  7. United States
  8. United Kingdom
  9. Vietnam
  10. Poland

With Indonesia having a fraction of combined population of India and China occupies the second position in the Rankings explains the basic awareness of mobile users from the country.

  • Page-view growth since November 2008: 228.5%
  • Unique-user growth since November 2008: 208.4%
  • Page views per user: 336

Above figures clearly signifies the dominance of Nokia over all its competitors at least in India. Opera Mini can be seen as one of the possible benchmark to evaluate the state of mobile internet usage patterns.  With the advent of 3G and increasing mobile penetration rates in Asia (India and China)  we can expect to interesting patterns and  growth figures from Opera.
