If Ecommerce-Journal is to be believed, Yahoo is expected to close down its MyBlogLog in January.
MyBlogLog offers publishers and developers access to personal, demographic, taste and activity data of a
website’s readers. With over 450,000 blog communities and roughly 645,000 members, along with the countless services shared, the amount of information collected is huge.
However, Yahoo’s representatives hasn’t come to any final decision yet. While there is an option to shut the project, the other options also exist.
Head of Yahoo Developer Network, Chris says:
Yesterday, rumors surfaced around Yahoo!’s imminent shutdown of its MyBlogLog service. Frankly, it’s no secret within Yahoo! that we’re actively discussing the future of MyBlogLog. However, it’s also true that we have not made any final decisions at this point. Is a shutdown on the table? Sure, that’s an option. But there are other options as well. We know this creates some uncertainty for current MyBlogLog users. While we aren’t quite ready to share more details, we promise to keep you posted.
Why is Yahoo closing it?
Analysts say Yahoo is not able to monetize it, and it does not see any good future for the service too. It has acquired less than a million users, and this is a very small number for the company like Yahoo to stick on.
I have never been regular user of MyBlogLog but have used it few times. It is neither an interesting service nor beneficial. I see the decision to close this service as a right step for Yahoo.
Yahoo is doing great in News Mash-up and content generation. Yahoo News is my favorite site for searching news, and want Yahoo to increase focus there.
Good Luck Yahoo.
Who will benefit?
Technorati will be the biggest beneficiary of this step. It will be seeing the death of its closest competitor, but this might not be a beneficial thing for it in the long term. After all when your type dies, it shows probable death for you also.
Yahoo MyBlogLog has died because of lack of focus of Yahoo Team and there was no innovation in last 2 years in that space. The service was stagnant and it had to die. Technorati may use this to its advantage, and innovate to live and grow.
Key is innovation and focus. Product concept hardly matters.
